History

The contest was created on 11 September 1932 under the name National, being re-named into Division 1 one year later. The competition originally consisted of twenty teams, which were divided in two groups, with the bottom three teams of each group being relegated into Division 2. The winners of the two groups were to face each other in a final match, the first taking place on 14 May 1933 between Olympique Lillois and Cannes, with Lillois winning the title for the first time. Afterwards, the league decided not to promote any clubs from the second division. The total number of participants changed to 16 in the 1934–35 season and remained until the 1938–39 season. The championship was named Ligue 1 in 2002. Its current champions are Montpellier, who won their first title in the 2011–12 season. Format

The Ligue 1 is a 20-team contest, with teams playing a certain other team twice (home and away) for a total of 38 games during a season. The clubs receive three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points in case of a loss. The ranking factors are, respectively: total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. The team with most points at the end of the season wins the champions title. If teams have the same number of points, the goal difference and then goals scored criteria are used to determine the winner. If the tie remains unsettled, teams would occupy the same position.

In case there is a tie for the championship, relegation or qualification to other competitions, the matter would be resolved by a play-off match at a neutral stadium. The Ligue 1 bottom three football clubs are relegated to Ligue 2, while the Ligue 2 top three teams are promoted in their place.
