Bundesliga was initially established by the German Football Association in 1962 in Dortmund and is now operated by the Deutsche Fußball Liga. Its first season started in 1963 and since then the competition has seen 51 clubs compete for the title. With a total of 21 wins, FC Bayern Munich has been the Bundesliga champion the most. Other football clubs to have won the Bundesliga include Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV, which is the only club to have participated continuously in the Bundesliga since its foundation.  Bet on Bundesliga at Betfair!

Each of the 18 teams in Bundesliga competition plays against a certain other team once at home and once away. Initially, a victory was worth two points, but since the 1995–96 season, the teams have been awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points in case of a loss. The football club which gained the most points during the season becomes the German champion. In case of an equal number of points, the following tie-breakers are applied respectively: goal difference for the entire season, total goals scored, head-to-head results, head-to-head goals scored, head-to-head away goals scored and total away goals scored for the entire season.

The bottom two teams of the table are relegated into the 2nd Bundesliga, while the best two teams of the 2nd Bundesliga are promoted. The third-last team (16th place) in the Bundesliga plays a two-leg play-off match against the 2nd Bundesliga’s third-placed team, the winning team securing its place in the next season of the Bundesliga, whereas the loser gets to play in the 2nd Bundesliga.
